The Thirteenth Dalai Lama (1965)

TOKAN TADA is member of the Research Department of the Toyo Bunko (Oriental Library) in Tokyo. Born in Akita in 1890, he studied Lamaism in 'Tibet from 1913 to 1923. During his stay there, he acted as an unofficial foreign advisor to the XIIIth Dalai Lama with whom he was acquainted in India before he entered Tibet.
On his coming back to Japan, he occupied several chairs, at Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, and Keio University. He compiled with his colleagues of the Tohoku University A Complete Catalogue, of the Tibetan Buddhist Canons in 1934 and A Catalogue of the Tohoku University Collection of Tibetan Works on Buddhism in 1953, for which he was awarded the Japan Academy Prize in 1955.
